Clymping At Christmas
The holiday cottage is located in the quiet rural Conservation Area of the Climping Gap. This is the longest stretch of natural coastline between Bognor and Brighton.
The dunes area on the beach are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and they are part of the West Beach Local Nature Reserve.
To find out more about the Climping Gap, including footpath maps, details of the local wildlife and a little of the local history, please take a look at the Clymping Gap Partnership website Climping or Clymping? Well, if you are looking at a map, you are likely to see Climping. So, to help you find us, that is the spelling you will find mostly on this website. You will however see many references to the more traditional name of Clymping and this is the spelling preferred by the Parish Council. You can walk from the front gate of the cottage straight onto a footpath that will take you across fields to the beach in just 10 minutes. The area is very popular with ornothologists as the vast undeveloped nature of the area, attracts both native and migratory species. In particular, you will hear many skylarks as you walk to the beach. The beach is vast and very rarely crowded and a popular location for dog walkers, horse riders, wind surfers and kite surfers. Weather wise, the area has its own micro-climate, generally experiencing more sunshine hours than other locations in the South of England. This is probably because the area is protected by the South Downs behind Climping and also by Selsey to the West. These factors, combined with local sea breezes, will often leave Climping sunny when other areas are cloudy or even raining. This can be seen most clearly on cold front days, when showers have either already spent themselves by the time they get to Climping or they get pushed back into the South Downs by the sea breeze. The local church of St. Mary's was originally a Norman watch tower and built in 1170 with the church added later at around 1230 and it is well worth a visit. There is usually a family service at 11am on a Sunday. It also happened to be where we were married, so lots of ancient history! Walking distance from the cottage you will find Baird's Farm Shop, who stock pretty much everything you may need during your stay in the area. Aside from the usual household and storecupboard items, they have a superb butchery, mostly locally sourced fresh fruit and vegetables and their own in-house bakery with a wonderful variety of homemade breads and cakes. A few hundred yards from the cottage, you will find the Black Horse Pub serving traditional and seasonal fayre: Climping is close to the delightful Cathedral town of Arundel, only 20 minutes away from the Roman City of Chichester and walking distance from the river Arun.
